Correct Way to Use Plumber’s Tape

Plumber's tape (aka Teflon tape) has numerous benefits that make it an indispensable part of any plumber's toolkit.

Plumber’s tape, also known as Teflon tape or thread seal tape, is a thin, white tape made of PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene) that is used to seal the threads of pipes and fittings. It is an essential tool in the plumbing industry and has numerous benefits that make it an indispensable part of any plumber’s toolkit.

In this article we will explain the benefits of using plumber’s tape and how to use plumbers tape correctly.

Benefits of plumber’s tape

One of the primary benefits of Teflon tape is that it helps to create a watertight seal around pipe threads and fittings. When two threaded pipes are connected, there is often a small gap between the threads that can allow water to leak through. By wrapping plumber’s tape around the threads, you can fill in this gap and prevent any leaking. This is especially important when working with pipes that carry hot water or other fluids that could cause damage if they leak.

In addition to creating a watertight seal, Teflon tape also helps to prevent pipes from sticking or binding. When two pipes are connected, the threads can sometimes become stuck or difficult to separate. Plumber’s tape helps to lubricate the threads, making it easier to connect and disconnect pipes without causing damage.

Another benefit of plumber’s tape is that it is extremely easy to use. It can be applied quickly and easily, and it requires no special tools or equipment. All you need is a roll of plumber’s tape and a pair of scissors to cut off a length of tape as needed.

Plumber’s tape is also extremely durable and long-lasting. It is resistant to temperature changes, UV radiation, and other environmental factors, which means it can withstand the harsh conditions found in many plumbing systems. This makes it a reliable choice for use in both residential and commercial plumbing systems.

Overall, plumber’s tape is a simple, but highly effective tool that has numerous benefits for plumbers and DIY enthusiasts alike. It is an essential item for anyone working with pipes and fittings, and it can save time, money, and headaches by helping to create a secure, watertight seal and prevent pipes from sticking or binding.

How to apply thread tape correctly

Although plumbers tape is pretty easy to use, there is a proper way to apply it. You should try to apply Teflon tape correctly the first time to safe yourself headaches later.

The secret to using plumber’s tape is to wrap it around your pipe in the correct direction.

Wrap the tape around the pipe in the same clockwise direction of how the pipe will turn into the opposite fitting. That way, it won’t unravel while making up the joint.

Clean the pipe

Use a clean rag to clean the male threads at the end of the pipe.

Line up the pipe and tape

Place the plumber’s tape at the second thread of the pipe. Hold it in place using a finger or thumb. The tape should be laid flat (not twisted up) over the threads, and should extend perpendicular to the length of pipe.

Wrap the tape

Wrap the tape around the pipe in a direction that is the same as the direction the pipe will turn.

Keep the tape tight

Keep tension on the tape so that it wraps tightly around the pipe. You will work away from the pipe’s end, overlapping the tape as necessary.

Wrap 4 to 6 times

Finish the pipe by wrapping four to six times around it, ending near the end of each thread (opposite the pipe’s end).

Break the tape

Grab the tape between thumb and forefinger, and break it apart. Smooth over the loose ends over the threads. Now the pipe is ready to be inserted into the fitting.

Applications

You can use plumber’s tape to replace pipe-joint compounds (pipe dope). It can be used on both standard metal pipes as well as rigid plastic pipe. The following are some common uses for plumber’s tape:

  • Shower arms
  • Showerheads
  • Tub spouts that are threaded
  • Pipe-to-coupling connections
  • Pipe-to-valve connections

Different names

You can ask for Teflon tape in any hardware store and you will get the product you need. However, there is no product that bears this name. You can also ask for PTFE tape or thread tape.
